Planning a Renovation
Repairing Damaged Walls: Pool renovations are typically done on older pools. There is a possibility that some or all of the walls need to be replaced in the pool.
Option- Adding or Deleting a Pool Light: After the concrete decking is removed, customer chose to have a new light installed. There is also an option for an eliminating a light.
Option - Replace Copper Light Niche: Many pools that are over 30 years old have a copper light niche. The copper deteriorates over the years from water chemistry. Eventually becoming as thin as aluminum foil and tearing causing the pool to leak. Once the copper light niche leaks, it cannot be salvageable as it is too frail and thin. APCO Pools always recommends replacing the copper light niche or eliminating the light before the new liner is installed. To replace or cover a leaking copper light niche after the renovation has been completed will most likely require replacing the existing liner and possibly decking.
Adding an Additional Skimmer: Many older pools were built with insufficient plumbing. Adding an additional skimmer increases water circulation and filtration.
Broken Skimmer Box: When removing the existing concrete, there is a possibility that the existing skimmer may crack. This should be discussed with the concrete contractor ahead of time.
Option - New Plumbing Lines: It is highly recommended that the existing plumbing lines be tested before the new deck is installed. If the plumbing lines are really old, it may be more cost effective to run new plumbing lines. The existing plumbing lines may test good but can still have chemical damage which would be It difficult to tell. See https://www.apcopools.com/galleries/miscellaneous/ for additional information.
Existing Chemical Damage: The pipes can be pressure tested and may not be leaking but that does not diagnose if the plumbing line has any form of chemical damage. A PVC pipe that has chlorine chemical damage can weaken overtime causing the pipe to collapse. See https://www.apcopools.com/galleries/miscellaneous/ for additional information.
Option - Main Drain: A new main drain was installed to give better circulation to the pool.
Option - Adding Return Line: While the concrete is removed, there is an option to add another return line for better circulation.
Option - Diving Board: The concrete contractor installs the diving board bolts when the concrete is wet. The existing diving board can also be eliminated with the new pool design.
Option - Rope Hooks: Rope hooks is an option.
Option - French Drains: This customer's pool liner floated when it rained because of poor drainage. When he had his pool renovation done, he had French drains installed around his pool.
Option - Pressure Side Pool Cleaner: Although we prefer robotic vacuum cleaners, some customers would like to have a Pressure side pool cleaner. When the concrete is removed, there is an option to install a new line. You may also need to have a booster pump installed. If the pool has a vacuum line, there is also an option to turn it into a return line.
Requirement - Bonding Wire: The building code requires bonding wire to be installed before the new decking is in place. Bonding is a wire that is placed around the perimeter of the pool. The purpose of bonding is to bring metallic objects to the same potential, thus reducing the shock hazard. This is obviously an important consideration for people immersed in a container of water. Bonding is done by a licensed electrician and can cost around $400-$500.
Option - Relocating Filtration Area: With the new renovation, the filtration system can be relocated. The concrete contractor can pour a filtration pad while he is installing the deck or a premade filtration pad can be bought. See https://www.apcopools.com/galleries/filtration-equipment/ for additional Filtration Equipment information.
Option - Safety Cover: The concrete needs to cure for at least 30 days before safety cover anchors can be installed. See https://www.apcopools.com/galleries/safety-covers/ for additional Safety Cover information.
